Tiki Central Profile
You always remember your first, I am no exception. I remember seeing her, across the room. Sitting there, she called to me with unspoken words. I looked at her, admiring her shape, her lines. It was not meant to be, not that night. Our paths would cross again though, there she was, sitting in that same room, calling to my gaze. This time I had the courage, to find out more. Her name was Pele, she was a beauty alright, she felt so good in my hand, but I could not imagine it lasting between us. How could it,what kind of a future would we have together. No, again, not this time. It would be a while until I saw her again, but we met in the same place, there she was. It's was it, I could not take it anymore. She will be mine, my then to be wife exclaimed lets just get her. It makes no sense, what would I ever do with her...but what the heck.
The place was the old Disneyland Gallery, located above the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean which was originally Intended to be Walt Disney's personal apartment at Disneyland. She was the Disneyland Pele Tiki Mug.
I enjoy and collect a wide variety of mugs, I like the vintage, the originals that had no predecessor. I like the modern, drawing inspiration from the past while evolving the genre. I like the limited editions, that only a few will posses, and the mass produced whose numbers are in the thousands. More than anything, I like that the one Pele, got me into the Tiki scene. Though I think there was a latent appreciation slumbering within me, being a SoCal child, going to Disneyland often, experiencing the Enchanted Tiki Room, and The Polynesian Village Resort. I'm fortunate that I still live in the a place that has an active tiki culture.
