My tiki mug collection started approximately fifteen years ago following a visit to a local thrift-store. One lucky day I found eight hand-carved wooden tiki mugs of mid-century vintage. The find was stunning..I held in my hand a piece of my childhood past. SOLD! The mugs used to decorate my kitchen counters and I've used them as cups around my apartment - sometimes at parties and informal gatherings. A few years later I sold them on eBay; I used the cash to fund a vacation to Pennsylvania. Since that initial thrift-store tiki find, a close friend re-introduced me to polypop via exposure to local tiki artists. More importantly, I became aware of the social community associated with this healthy local art scene, while other factors contributed to my growing enthusiasm too, i.e. discovering the Tiki Central website was an eye-opener! My first big social tiki "event" was called the Mission Tiki Drive-In in Montclair, CA. I was inspired right there to create...art...create what kinda art though? Because I have no wood-carving experience, I choose to paint. I still paint today and owe a lot to the tiki community for my daily dose of polypop inspiration. Occasionally I find myself dealing directly with fellow tiki artists, buying and/or trading when the opportunity arises. Thanks for reading this intro - now go out and get your mug-on :) ALOHA! G
