Distinguishing
This is a variant of the Orchids of Hawaii R-13A. It differs from the R-13A in several aspects: it has a striated bottom with "Orchids of Hawaii" and "Japan"; its lip is glazed brown, not white; its glaze is more glossy than matte; and its exterior design suggests that is was made with a different mold than the R-13A. At least two other mugs of this type already exist on Ooga-Mooga, both classified as R-13A, owned by ukutiki (http://bit.ly/1hXVvN1) and paul64 (http://bit.ly/1sLAY3c). The mug in my collection has an incised line that circumscribes the mug about an inch below the lip. Ukutiki's mug has many tool marks, which might be an attempt to give the coco a more organic or aged texture. The lack of these marks on the other two mugs suggests that the makers customized the mugs with hand tools after molding.
