Vicious Virgin Bowl With Hands Behind Back
|
This is one of the rarest bowls ever. My biggest find to date! The bowl is glazed in a satin pink but has a drip glaze over the edges of the rim that ranges from dark green to turquoise. One was sold by the Starlight Room to EdgeofTexas. There is also an arm-in-air version of this bowl on display at Oceanic Arts that has almost an identical glaze and was made by Beauce in Canada. Bob said it was probably inspired by Spurlin Ceramics, but that there were lots of people making similar bowls...unmarked. The arm-in-air version has somewhat sexier looking wahines and was used at the Leilani in Wisconsin (mentioned in Tiki Modern on page 112) and the Marie Antoinette Tahiti Restaurant and Bar in Quebec. I had two of these Hands Behind Back versions at one point and sold one.

This pink bowl with blue/green glaze running down the sides features three nude girls around the outside. Each is kneeling and has her hands behind her back. Wood grain pattern on underside of bowl. The Los Angeles Islander menu shows a drink served in this bowl, also called the "Vicious Virgin" and this is pictured in Sven Kirsten's The Book of Tiki on page 163. The featured drink appears to have been a version of the daiquiri, made with Virgin Islands rum, limes, and rock candy syrup.
