This is the early version of the Headhunter with a broad nose and large hoop earrings. In a later edition, the earrings were removed and a handle was added, possibly to make it easier to hold and less fragile. The glaze is a muddy brown with yellow highlights that was used on several Spurlin pieces and is quite unique. The Los Angeles Islander menu shows a drink served in this mug called the "Coffee Grog" and this is pictured in Sven Kirsten's The Book of Tiki on page 163.
