This mug portrays a seated samurai in full armor, eating, with his tessen (fan) in one hand. The samurai was often disarmed, such as when performing domestic chores, at leisure, or meeting with superiors. Armed with a tessen in his obi, though, the samurai was never completely unarmed. He could defend himself easily with what appeared to be a common, everyday object. This mug design is similar to another samurai mug in Tiki Quest on page 103.
