Japanese inscription マイルズ (meaning Mairuzu in Japanese, Miles in English on right/bottom foot)
Ceramic Matango - Got this from Miles Nielsen (Munktiki) right before he took off to study ceramics in Japan (April 2008). I traded some classic Japanese Vinyl Swag for this lil'guy and have been happy ever since. Mantago is ceramic and measures roughly 14" tall. This edition is primarily green with yellow chest/shoulder fringe and red eyes. Estimated value is $250-$300 and not more than 50 were said to be made (info provided by http://www.munk-e.com/14%20inch%20Matango.htm).
This is a ceramic sculpture from Munktiki's Yakimon line. The character of Matango is from a 1963 Japanese tokusatsu movie. It was directed by Ishirō Honda, and written by Takeshi Kimura based on the story "The Voice in the Night" by William Hope Hodgson. The movie has developed a cult audience over the years, partly due to its bleakness and unusual themes, particularly when compared to other Japanese fantasy and science fiction films of the same period
