This skull shaped totem mug has a square opening at the top. The facial features are all in relief. The eyes are large and come to small points near the long flared nose. The mouth is straight and shows eight teeth. Although often mistaken for Polynesian/Tiki, this mug actually belongs to a set of Pacific Northwest Indian Totem pieces. The totem set consisted of at least three slightly differing head mugs, these taller mugs, S&P shakers, and other accompanying pieces which rounded out the set. These were sold in tourist shops throughout the Pacific Northwest. There is also a hobbyist version of this mold which probably came later. With the cold paint stripped away, the features look more skull-like and less totem-like.
